Rio Abajo Conservation Area
This 93-acre property located along the Rio Grande south of Albuquerque is currently owned by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The Property’s direct connectivity to Rio Grande riparian habitat (or bosque) in the southwest portion provides excellent refugia for a plethora of both mammalian and avian wildlife. According to Natural Heritage New Mexico, 14 species are listed as a state-threatened or endangered species within Valencia County. The Rio Grande corridor is also a significant migratory route for birds, and native riparian and wetland habitats along the river historically provided important breeding habitat for many species. The Property has been occupied by numerous cultural groups for millennia and is rich in cultural and historical resources. Protection of the Property will compliment and augment the scenic value and openness of this vast area while buffering and limiting encroachment into the already depleting bosque system of the Rio Grande.
