Area Description

The Northwest region includes counties: Bernalillo, Cibola, Los Alamos, McKinley, Rio Arriba, San Juan,  Sandoval, and Valencia

This region is predominated by the Colorado Plateau, but also includes the San Juan River watershed, and the San Mateo and Zuni mountains. The San Juan basin is a major source of oil and natural gas production, but mining, agriculture and recreation are also important economic activities. Most of the landownership is comprised of Navajo Reservation and Bureau of Land Management lands with smaller areas of Cibola National Forest lands, private and State Trust lands.
