Canones Creek

Located in north central New Mexico about 3 miles south of Chama, NM, this 19-acre easement is part of a larger property. Habitats onsite range from open-water aquatic to small pockets of dry uplands, but the principle vegetation includes riparian woodland, wet meadows, marshes and open shrub. The easement includes a stretch of Canones Creek, three irrigation ditches, two large ponds, and a mature canopy of narrowleaf cottonwood, box elder and alder groves.  The two ponds are the most apparent feature of the landscape, each at more than an acre each in size. The property is managed for wildlife habitat and scenic open space, and is used for fishing, wildlife viewing and other recreational activities.
