Deer Canyon Ranch

The Deer Canyon Preserve conservation easement consists of approx. 5,187 acres of land adjacent to and interspersed with a residential development. The property is set on the western edge of Chupadera Mesa and includes parts of the mesa’s western slope. The area is dominated by pinon-juniper woodland with areas of open grassland. The Property includes habitat for a variety of mammalian species including elk, mule deer, black bear and mountain lion, in addition to golden eagle, turkey and other species of wildlife. It is also valuable habitat for a wide array of other native bird species.

NMLC holds an easement over an adjacent 1,800-acre property on top of Chupadera Mesa called Goat Canyon. Together these conserved lands provide a large tract of open space and wildlife habitat in an area facing development pressure. The properties are used by nearby residents as scenic open space and for passive recreation, and are visible from Highway 55, “The Salt Mission Trail,” and Highway 60. For more information on the property check out the Dear Canyon Homeowner’s associate website here.
