Dimmick-Kinsey Property
Surrounded by a mixture of agricultural land, commercial enterprises and suburban residential development, this 13.3-acre property lies in and adjacent to the Animas River. Mostly level ground, there is some wetland area lying adjacent to the pond on the property as well. More than half the property is forested in riparian vegetation – cottonwood, alder and willow.
The property is currently used solely as a residential parcel and wildlife habitat. Only 6% of the land in San Juan County is held privately. The majority of land is tribal land (65%) and the remainder is in federal and state ownership. The area has seen persistent growth in population spurred by the energy industry. Protecting this property is critical to providing riparian access for wildlife in the region.
The easement was transferred to NMLC in May 2018 from the La Plata Open Space Conservancy.
